The Stormy Return of the Red Tornado!
Justice League of America #64 & 65
August & September 1968
In a Nutshell
In this two-part JLA/JSA crossover, T.O. Morrow has created the android Red Tornado to infiltrate the Justice Society. After the android inadvertently causes the JSA’s defeat, Morrow travels to Earth-1 to exact revenge on the JLA. Red Tornado saves the day by figuring out how to bridge the gulf between worlds under his own power.
This story represents the end of Gardner Fox’s initial run. He will be back for occasional fill-in issues, but will no longer be the series’ primary writer.
Roll Call
As has become typical of these crossover events, no Justice League members appear in the first half of the story. Most of the team appears in the second issue, but are summarily defeated by Morrow’s creations.
Most of the Justice Society also participates, but are all defeated by Morrow’s plan.
Red Tornado single handedly saves the day in the end, while Hawkman, Wonder Woman, the Atom, Aquaman and Snapper Carr beat up some henchmen.
Once again, the Martian Manhunter is the only JLA member missing.
The Scorecard
In the first chapter in this two-parter, Superman and Batman are both featured as floating heads on the cover, though they do not appear in the book. The second chapter represents Snapper Carr’s fourth ever cover appearance.
