Case of the Disabled Justice League!
Justice League of America #36
June 1965
In a Nutshell
Brain Storm is back. He was only gone for three issues, but now he’s back. He uses his awesome mental abilities to afflict the JLA with disabilities, but the Leaguers only see this as a chance to be extra inspirational.
Roll Call
This is the fourth revenge story in the last six issues, which is making it difficult to justify the League’s existence. They once again spend most of their time defending themselves against a direct attack.
In this issue, however, the League has the added incentive of providing inspiration to a group of disabled boys. So it’s not unreasonable to give credit for that.
- Superman, the Flash, Green Lantern, Green Arrow and Hawkman are the Leaguers who must overcome physical handicaps imposed by Brain Storm to battle a monstrous version of Batman.
- Once Brain Storm entrances these Leaguers to serve as his minions, it’s up to the Atom, Aquaman, Wonder Woman, the Martian Manhunter and Batman to free them from his thrall. Four of these heroes assist by coming up with ways to distinguish their opponents, but Aquaman does nothing. In one panel we see him getting clobbered by the Flash. In the next five panels, he is simply standing around watching the fight.
- So everyone participates except for Aquaman and Snapper Carr, who is out sick.
The Scorecard
The Atom and Batman have finally caught up to Snapper Carr in the contribution rankings, leaving only newcomer Hawkman lagging behind the team mascot.
