The Wheel of Misfortune!
Justice League of America #6
September 1961
In a Nutshell
Professor Amos Fortune has created the Stimoluck, a device that affects the luck glands of all human beings. The plan is infallible, because every member of the Justice League is definitely a human being.
Roll Call
Most of this story is irrelevant for our purposes. The Leaguers encounter a string of bad luck, then go on a pair of random side-missions that Amos Fortune capitalizes on. Having proven his theory, Fortune captures the six core League members and straps them to his Wheel of Misfortune, intent on permanently robbing them of all their good luck.
What he didn’t count on is the fact that Martians don’t have luck glands like humans. And apparently Atlanteans. And demi-goddesses made from enchanted clay. The Martian Manhunter is unaffected by Fortune’s devices, and captures the villain single-handedly. This earns him the extra Saving the Day bonus point.
The Scorecard
J’onn’s scoring two Contribution Points in this issue move him into sole position at the top of the chart. What is particularly noteworthy is that he did so without using his Martian Super-breath, which has been his go-to super-power up until now. In all previous issues, J’onn has showcased his super-breath to the exclusion of his other powers.
