The Case of the Stolen Super-Powers!
The Brave and the Bold #30
June 1960
In a Nutshell
Professor Ivo has created the astonishing Amazo, an android capable of duplicating the powers of the Justice League!* Ivo seeks to create an Immortality Elixir, and uses Amazo to steal the required ingredients. The assembled JLA do a terrible job at thwarting him.
*Superman and Batman not included.
Roll Call
- The Flash assembles the team to report on a series of robberies committed by someone duplicating the powers of the Justice Leaguers. His detective work in correlating these thefts to momentary power losses the team had experienced earns him participation credit this issue, but this is the third issue in a row where the member who calls the mission has nothing further to offer.
- Snapper Carr also contributes by offering an explanation for the motive of the bizarre robberies. The thieves appear to be targeting extremely long-lived animal specimens. The team splits up to protect other likely targets.
- Superman and Batman race off to protect a whale and an elephant, and are never heard from again.
- Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Green Lantern, the Flash and the Martian Manhunter all fail in their respective missions. They are captured by Amazo and brought to Professor Ivo’s lair. Ivo drains them of their powers and erases their memories of their own identities.
- Through an insanely dangerous trick involving deliberately inhaling chlorine gas, Green Lantern manages to avoid the memory wipe. He uses his power ring to siphon off Amazo’s stolen powers, capture Ivo, and restore the powers and memories of his teammates.
The Scorecard
All seven Leaguers show up this issue, but while the Flash and Snapper Carr get the ball rolling, there's only one hero who actually accomplishes anything. Green Lantern single-handedly rescues his teammates, restores their powers and memories, and defeats the bad guys. For this reason, I am instituting a new "Saves the Day" policy. Any time a single character can be said to solve that issue's problem without assistance from anyone else on the team, they're getting a bonus Contribution Point.
This puts GL in the lead for overall Contribution Rating, with the Flash and of all people, Snapper Carr, the only other Leaguers still at 100%.
