Crisis on Earth-One!
Justice League of America #21
August 1963
In a Nutshell
This issue chronicles the first meeting between the Justice League and Justice Society, and would be the first installment in an annual tradition of summer crossovers that would last for the next twenty years.
Roll Call
The nine core members of the JLA all participate in this adventure, with only Snapper Carr missing. This is the first League adventure Snapper has failed to show up for, with his absence explained by exams.
Seven guest stars from the Justice Society also appear: the original Flash, Hawkman, Green Lantern and the Atom, as well as Black Canary, Hourman and Doctor Fate.
This is the first half of a two-part story, and the heroes do not fare well. The Justice League are confounded by Earth-1 villains Doctor Alchemy, Felix Faust and Chronos, while the Justice Society are unable to capture Earth-2 villains the Fiddler, the Wizard, and the Icicle.
The story ends with the heroes swapping worlds to pursue their nemeses, so we expect a better performance next month.
The Scorecard
Snapper Carr loses his perfect attendance record this month. This is also the first JLA cover on which the Flash does not appear, ending his streak. Green Lantern and Wonder Woman are now the only Leaguers who have appeared on every cover to date.
